What is Small Business Saturday?

It all started in 2010. The Great Recession hit, and the economy took a turn, especially for small businesses. Recognizing the impact, American Express launched a nationwide movement called Small Business Saturday that sought to bring holiday shoppers to local small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

One year later, waves of support started to ripple across the country. Local government officials took notice, the Senate passed a unanimous resolution to support Small Business Saturday, and even the president of the United States gave a little shoutout (thanks Obama!).

Today, the little idea that stemmed from the small business has grown into a nationwide holiday shopping tradition driven by millions of communities and individuals, like you.
